All throughout the country Philadelphia sports fans are synonymous with fighting, drinking excessively, and booing their own team, which is true, these things happen. They tend to happen in every major American city to every team, but Philadelphia is often seen as the scapegoat for dirty fans. Why is this? Some speculate the people of the City of Brotherly Love are incapable of truly showing love in regards to their sports teams. Countless times stories like throwing batteries at the Vet or pelting Santa with snowballs (Santa was drunk and the Eagles were getting destroyed at halftime, that is a volatile combination) have made their way into the headlines depicting Philadelphia sports patrons as monsters. What some see as arbitrary behavior I see as passion. One thing you have to admit about Philly fans is they are some sort of passionate that borderlines insanity when it comes to their teams. Sometimes they cross the line and do something that is uncalled for. But hey, who doesn’t? That’s the result of having a super passionate fan base. The passion can sometimes over boil and lead to something else, which is indeed unfortunate, but comes with the territory.
In addition to having fans crazed with passion for their teams, Philadelphia also has a very enduring fan base. The Flyers, Phillies, Eagles, and Sixers have all put their fans through a whole lot and at times made it very difficult for fans to return. The relationship between Philly’s teams and their fans is comparable to an abusive domestic relationship that never ends; no matter how many times you get beaten and battered, it never outweighs your love and you always come back. Philadelphia fans are blue-collar, knowledgeable, and honest. They know what they want to see on the field/court/ice, and if that’s not what they’re getting, they’ll let you know. The fans of Philly demand heart, hustle, and determination. When they get anything else from their team or player’s, they will boo their faces blue. However if a team tries with everything they have or a player rips his heart out of his chest to win, they will be forever celebrated. That, to me, epitomizes the passion that runs through the veins of all Philadelphia sports fans.
