Just when the Sixers had a plan to get back on track, in comes the NBA to ruin it for us. The NBA and commissioner Adam Silver are trying to abandon the current draft lottery system. A new proposed system would have each team pick at a random spot every year. This would ensure a team a top five selection every six seasons, and a top twelve selection every four years. This means teams that are already good could potentially get top picks for no reason other than it's their turn. The NBA is a superstar driven league, there's no question about it. If your team lacks talent, they simply won't be good, it's as simple as that. So how is a talentless team supposed to get superstar caliber players if the lottery is taken away? This new system will make the already good teams dominant. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm getting tired of seeing the same teams be good in the NBA (No offense to the Spurs, they've earned every championship they've won). How many Laker-Celtics Finals matchups can there be?
Tanking, while not an ideal way of rebuilding a team, works. Many teams have used this approach when they are in desperate need of an overhaul. So why now, when the Sixers are making moves to get better, would the league do this? How do they expect bad teams to get good if they can't rebuild from the draft? While the system may be a bit flawed, it is designed to help out teams that suck, plain and simple. Regardless of the draft system, bad teams will always be around. But with a lottery system in place, they have hope of becoming a good team. Tanking is a last resort effort that teams only use if they need to, and in the Sixer's case, they need it badly. Again this new system has only been proposed, so nothing is official yet. Whichever system is in place come next year's draft one thing is for certain, the NBA frowns upon tanking. If it brings the Sixers back to a winning team though, I'm all for it.
